Outdoor Activities for Winter

Imagine exploring a large cavern filled with strange stalactites and stalagmites, as well as Eastern Pipistrelle bats, salamanders, and blind trout. Drive to Linville Caverns, the only public cavern in the NC Blue Ridge that allows visitors to step inside a mountain. With a constant temperature of 52 degrees inside the cavern, this is an incredible winter excursion.

Nothing is better than a driving tour of the beautiful waterfalls found in and around the Blue Ridge Mountains. Pearson's Falls and Glen is a natural feature located between Tryon and Saluda in the Blue Ridge foothills. This great winter location has a 90-foot waterfall and 275 acres of lush cove forest.

Catawba Falls is located at Old Fort on the Pisgah National Forest's southern border. At 100 feet high, Catawba Falls is one of the most magnificent waterfalls in the Blue Ridge. There are crisper views and incredibly amazing ice sculptures during cold spells.

Mountain View to See

The hiking season in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains never ends, and neither do the breathtaking views. The trails are less crowded during winter, and there are views that you would not see in the summer.

The Moore Cove Falls Trail is a great family and pet-friendly hike to a stunning cascade. This 3/4-mile journey leads to one of the most beautiful and easily accessible waterfall hikes.

Rattlesnake Lodge is a three-mile journey that follows the Mountains to Sea Trail to the ruins of a historic private lodge. It's close to Asheville and follows an old wagon train route with breathtaking views and beautiful woodland.

Lover's Leap Loop Trail is a local favorite that puts you on the Appalachian Trail. It's a beautiful journey to Hot Springs, a small trail town tucked in a valley alongside the stunning French Broad River. Hike the two-mile climb to the summit for panoramic views of Lover Leap.

While you're there, check out the trail at Max Patch, which is a short picturesque drive from Hot Springs. You’ll find yourself on a grassy, bald peak with 360-degree vistas. Max Patch, at 4,629 feet, is one of the most picturesque summits in the Southeast.
