There's something about spring in the Blue Ridge Mountains that makes faith feel tangible. The trails come alive with wildflowers, the mornings carry a crispness that wakes you up from the inside, and the world around you is growing, stretching, and becoming something new.
Located just minutes from Asheville in Western North Carolina, Camp Tekoa Retreats has been hosting faith retreats for decades. Owned and operated by the Western NC Conference of the United Methodist Church, our mission is simple and clear: touching hearts, changing lives, and sharing the light of Christ. For youth pastors, church leaders, and ministry teams planning their next spring retreat, Camp Tekoa provides everything your group needs to step away from distractions and step into something meaningful.
Why Spring Is the Perfect Season for Youth Mountain Retreats
Spring offers a unique window for youth ministry. Students are deep into the school year, carrying the weight of academics, social pressures, and the constant noise of digital life. A spring retreat creates intentional space for young people to pause, breathe, and reconnect with God and each other.
The weather in Western North Carolina during spring is ideal for outdoor activities and worship. Longer days mean more time for adventure, and mild temperatures make everything from hiking to lakeside devotionals comfortable and enjoyable. Youth mountain retreats held during this season consistently create some of the most memorable and transformative experiences for groups.
Adventure Activities That Build Faith and Community
A youth retreat is only as effective as the experiences students share together. At Camp Tekoa, we offer an extraordinary range of on-site adventure activities that challenge students physically while reinforcing the spiritual themes of your retreat. Every element is designed to build trust, courage, and deeper connection within your group.
High-Energy Adventure Experiences
Our adventure programming pushes students beyond their comfort zones in ways that translate directly into faith lessons about trust, perseverance, and relying on God and community.
- The Big Zip — a fast, double zipline that launches from a 45-foot tower nestled in our meadow, sending participants soaring over 250 feet with mountain views all around. Attached is a Vertical Playground obstacle course for additional challenge.
- 35-Foot High Ropes Course — students climb staples to the course, cross the pirate's crossing, navigate the plank walk, maneuver through the Charlie Chaplin, and tackle the jungle swings before finishing with the final challenge of the 70-foot giant swing.
- 70-Foot Giant Swing — the last element of the high ropes course. Participants start 45 feet in the air and swing 70 feet through the trees. It's easily the most thrilling activity on site and an unforgettable lesson in letting go and trusting the process.
- Lake Zipline — one of our most popular activities, launching from the wooded shoreline and zipping out over our 3-acre spring-fed lake.
- Climbing Tower and Leap of Faith — a 40-foot climbing tower that challenges students to reach new heights, both literally and spiritually.
Team Building and Group Activities
Faith grows in community, and these activities foster the kind of teamwork and mutual support that strengthen youth groups long after the retreat ends.
- Low Elements Challenge Course — includes Low Ropes, PJ and J Log, Dinosaur Feet, Whale Watch, Swing, Labyrinth, The Maze, Spider Web, Lilly Pads, and 3 Islands. Every element is facilitated by Camp Tekoa staff to foster growth in your team.
- 18-Hole Disc Golf Course — a professional course spanning 5+ acres with tightly wooded, challenging holes suitable for beginners and advanced players alike.
- Bungo Ball — a unique sport that mixes dodgeball and handball, played in our outdoor court next to the activity field.
- Lighted Outdoor Basketball Court with a covered rainy day pavilion for activities regardless of weather.
- Tree Climb — climb 35 feet into a beautiful Tulip Poplar overlooking the mountains, ideal for younger students.
Lake and Nature Experiences
Our 3-acre spring-fed lake is a centerpiece of the Camp Tekoa experience and provides a natural setting for both adventure and reflection.
- Swimming with a high dive and water slide
- Rope swing over the lake
- Canoes and paddle boats for group outings
- Multiple hiking trails including the outer campsite loop, the Eagle trail, a lake loop trail, and a contemplative meditation trail
Worship and Gathering Spaces Built for Connection
Spring youth retreats need more than just adventure — they need spaces where students can worship, reflect, and encounter God together. Camp Tekoa offers dedicated spaces designed for exactly that.
Our Chapel in the Woods is nestled between two streams near the headwater springs of the lake. It seats 100 and provides the kind of solitude and natural beauty that makes worship feel intimate and real. For larger gatherings, the Campfire Circle overlooks the lake and seats 250, making it perfect for evening worship, songs, testimonies, and S'mores.
The Laurel Lodge complex includes Laurel Main, which seats 75 and works well for group meetings, games, and meals, along with Laurel Back Porch, where your group can gather in rocking chairs around a small campfire. The Open-Air Pavilion connects to the Dining Hall and provides an ideal space for worship services, campfire gatherings, and active games.
For meals, our cozy Dining Hall seats 185 and is served by a full commercial kitchen with propane stove, convection ovens, warmers, and a complete dishwashing station. Groups can prepare their own meals or use our food service, which accommodates 50 to 200 people.

Camp Tekoa can accommodate groups ranging from 20 to 300. Our facility includes 28 rooms across 12 buildings, providing flexibility for groups of all sizes. Multiple lodges and cabins are spread across campus, giving your youth group a true retreat experience surrounded by the mountain landscape.
